Lakewood led 3-1 going to the bottom of the ninth, but a pair of errors cost Lakewood the victory in the regulation nine innings. With Jared Simon pitching, Dominic Brown dropped a Helder Velazquez flyball and Dennis Winn bobbled a David Christiansen grounder to second. Pinch hitter Kevin Clark notched an RBI double, before catcher Beau Seabury tied the game with a single.
Simon, who had converted 11 straight save opportunities, was charged with the blown save, but also took the win by pitching the game's final three innings.
The BlueClaws took an early lead and never trailed thanks to three straight hits against Asheville starter Cory Riordan. Dominic Brown's RBI single gave Lakewood a 1-0 lead before Karl Bolt brought in another run with a doubleplay groundout.
But from that point forward Riordan was almost flawless. Lakewood's only other run came in the top of the ninth when Travis Mattair blasted a solo home run to leftfield. It was the second consecutive nine-inning game for Riordan, who struck out eight in effort.
Walter Tejeda was in position to take the victory, despite struggling to find the strikezone. The BlueClaws southpaw walked five batters in six innings, though he gave up just the first-inning run.
Sergio Escalona also gave the BlueClaws two scoreless innings of relief.
Lakewood (20-10, 58-42) has now won 10 of their 13 games against Southern Division opponents and Hickory over the last two weeks. Pending West Virginia's result later Sunday night, the BlueClaws find themselves a game and a half behind the Power in the North Division race.
Lakewood gets the night off before taking on Asheville (18-12, 64-36) on Monday night at 7:05 at McCormick Field. Chance Chapman (6-5) will make the start for the BlueClaws, while right-hander Robinson Fabian (2-2) gets the nod for the Tourists.
