Eaton, BlueClaws roughed up in 8-3 loss to West Virginia

Phillies starter gives up four runs in 3 2/3 innings

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Adam Eaton's first South Atlantic League start since 1997 did not go as planned, as the West Virginia Power roughed up the Big Leaguer for four runs in 3 2/3 innings in a 8-3 victory over the BlueClaws on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park.

Eaton, who made 19 starts for Philadelphia this season, began his stint in the Minors on a down note. The 30-year old right-hander gave up five hits, four for extra bases, while taking the loss. Steffan Wilson picked up two hits against Eaton (0-1) including a deep two-run home run to leftfield.

Wilson led the Power offensive charge, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a walk. The West Virginia designated hitter finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in four runs to push his season total to 78, third most in the league. Caleb Gindl also had a big night offensively, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

The Power combined for 13 hits against Eaton and Walter Tejeda. Tejeda made a piggyback start on his normal day and did not fare much better. The BlueClaws southpaw surrendered four earned runs in his 3 2/3 innings. The Power posted 11 baserunners against Tejeda, courtesy of eight hits and three walks.

Reymond Cruz followed Tejeda and faced the minimum five batters without allowing a hit to close out the game.

The BlueClaws hung tough with West Virginia early, putting up three runs in the first four innings against Power starter Evan Anundsen. Anundsen walked six batters in four innings, two of which scored.

Lakewood managed to tie the game after falling into a 2-0 hole, with single runs in each the second and the third. Jay Miller had a pair of RBIs with two groundouts and Tim Kennelly also drove in a run with a single, one of two hits for the rightfielder in the game.

Kennelly was the only BlueClaws hitter to pick up more than one hit, though all nine Lakewood starters did reach base.

Corey Frerichs (5-7) got the win with three scoreless innings of relief.

The loss pushed the BlueClaws (25-15, 63-47) to three games behind the first-place Power (28-12, 60- 49) with just one game remaining in the season series. Mike Stutes (1-0) will make his second start of the season after pitching six scoreless innings his first time out. Fellow 2008 draftee Lucas Luetge (0-0) will take the mound for West Virginia in the series finale.
